While most fruits are safe, there are a few that pregnant women should consume in moderation or avoid altogether due to potential side effects. Here are some fruits to be cautious about during pregnancy.


"Though ripe papaya in moderate quantities is generally deemed safe, unripe or semi-ripe papaya contains latex, which may induce contractions and potentially lead to premature labor," stated Swathi, a Dietician at Manipal Hospital, Vijayawada. She further emphasized, "It's advisable to consult with a doctor before incorporating papaya into your pregnancy diet."



Dr. Swathi explains that pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain, which, when consumed in large amounts, could potentially soften the cervix and induce contractions.


Grapes, particularly when consumed whole, can present a choking hazard. Furthermore, some healthcare providers advise against excessive grape intake due to potential pesticide residue. Thoroughly washing grapes and selecting organic options could help alleviate these concerns.


According to the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, women with preexisting diabetes or gestational diabetes, characterized by high blood sugar levels during pregnancy, may consider limiting their consumption of large servings of watermelon.

Due to its high water content, consuming watermelon in significant amounts may result in increased urination, potentially causing discomfort, particularly during nighttime.

Canned fruits in syrup

Choose fresh or frozen fruits without added sugars instead of canned fruits in heavy syrup, as the latter often contain added sugars and preservatives. This choice ensures a healthier option during pregnancy.

Passion Fruit

Although passion fruit is packed with vitamins and antioxidants, it's worth noting its high acidity level. Some pregnant women might experience heartburn or gastric discomfort from acidic fruits. In such cases, it's advisable to consume passion fruit in moderation.


Jackfruit is a distinctive tropical fruit with a texture resembling meat. While generally safe in moderate amounts, some pregnant women may encounter digestive discomfort due to its high fiber content. A journal published on ResearchGate suggested avoiding jackfruit during pregnancy. Dr. Vijay Laxmi, a Gynecologist at Star Maternity Hospital, warns against consuming overcooked jackfruit, as it can raise the body's overall temperature, potentially harming the fetus.



Avocado is a nutritious fruit rich in healthy fats, but its calorie density requires moderation to prevent excessive calorie intake. Incorporating it into a balanced diet is advisable.
